Don’t Mess With The Squanto

Posted On Thursday, January 15th, 2009 By David Veatch

Slightly off-topic post today, but this is, or could be, a rather pressing matter, and I’d like both to record the timing of it, and submit a request for thoughts and ideas. I took The Squanto to the vet yesterday, and found out that he’s 20lbs. On a 16lbs dog frame, that’s a lot of extra weight. It’ll dramatically increase his chances of having all manner of internal organ problems, including his heart and lungs, increase his risk of cancer, and very likely give him premature joint issues, such as arthritis, and could be the cause of his coughing as the extra weight compresses his trachea. I’d like to keep him around for a while, and given Schipperke’s lifetimes, that could be another 8 years or so. That means he has to lose that weight I’ve been aware of this for some time, and to maintain his weight at the healthy 15-17lbs, I’ve had him on a pretty strict diet of 1/2 cup dry dog food, given to him twice daily. In spite of that, he’s still been gaining. There is only one possible reason: The neighbors. I knew the neighbors fed him treats every now and again, but didn’t more »

Misadventures with Peanuts

Posted On Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008 By David Veatch

I’m on a conference call with my headphones on. It’s the kind of one-ear headphone set with a microphone that curves around in front of the mouth. I have a bag of peanuts. I have a handful of peanuts. I swing hand with peanuts up towards face to place peanuts in mouth. Peanuts hit microphone. I have a lap full of peanuts.

Paradigm Shift

Last night I hammered home. There was quite a bit we wanted to get done. First, I wanted to get to the Trek store to get a larger saddle bag, thus enabling me to use the Torelli in my daily commutes… at least for the time being. I ended up with the 120cu. in. Trek Side Loader. Noah recommended the Headland CMT. I went with the Side Loader for a couple of reasons… they had it at the Trek store right up the road from me, and I already had the mounting bracket installed under my seat from having bought the Pro Pack last year. The Side Loader doesn’t have the hard shell that the CMT has, but it is a little bit larger at 120cu. in., vs. 98cu. in. I really like the mounting bracket too. While I was there, I broke down and took the Portland for a little test ride around the parking lot. Uh… yeah. I like. A lot. It wasn’t sized for me, with the seat being way too low, and the levers were installed very high on the bars, but other than that, it was a fantastic ride. Getting used to Shimano style road more »

On Recovery, Dinner, Wet Streets and Branches

Posted On Friday, May 2nd, 2008 By David Veatch

Yesterday was supposed to be a recovery day. I was supposed to rest and take it easy on the way to and from work. In order to maximize my training effort, and make my commutes actually count towards that, I need to apply a little structure to it. Unfortunately, both work and Kansas had different ideas. First, I had to head into work a little earlier than I planned, forcing me to up the pace a bit. Second, I had to fight headwinds gusting up to a reported 35mph, and steady at 10-15mph. That made the ride in pretty high on the intensity scale. Work itself was anything but relaxing and restful. Many different issues converged to make me the nexus of many a foul temper. I don’t mind, though. It’s not my job to be liked, it’s my job to be vigilant and diligent in the protection of the customers the choose to grant us their business. The ride home could have been relaxing, had I let it be. I wasn’t in a real hurry, but with the same winds I fought in the morning helping push me along, the temptation to take advantage of it was just too more »

Shrimp Basket

Posted On Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 By David Veatch

All was not simply “flat” last night at pool. The Clarette Club has a really good shrimp basket, and I partook of it with joy and zest. Sharks, when it used to be Aces & 8′s, had the best shrimp basket I’ve been able to find. They removed it from the menu when they became Sharks. Fah. *spit* Clarette’s Shrimp Basket is a good, if not perfect, replacement. Others might attempt to rate Fish & Chips around town. I’m much more a fan of the Shrimp Basket. I like all kinds of shrimp, but fried is my favorite, and the Clarette Club isn’t too bad. My only complaint would be that they skimped on the fries. They were good, there just weren’t enough of them. Maybe I’ll work up a ratings system like he has. I do love my shrimp, and it’d be worth it.

Lazy Saturday

Posted On Saturday, March 15th, 2008 By David Veatch

It’s a lazy day today. The snow and cold keeps me from riding, though I have many miles to make up to meet my goals for the year. Instead, we have accomplished exactly the following: Recovered from a fantastic evening with the GF’s brother and soon-to-be fiance. There was imbibery, Scattergories, and Taboo. Watched the last four episodes of season four of Nip Tuck. In spite of myself, I’ve really come to enjoy that show, though the self-destructive nature of the characters drives me absolutely nuts on occasion. Picked up some grass seed at Home Depot and hit the bare spots in the yard for the first time. Yeah, it’s a little cold, but it’s damp, and I’m hoping that some will take root. I hate muddy puppy footprints, and the more grass I plant, the less of that I’ll have to deal with. Ate pizza. Contemplated buying the boxed set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I miss that show, and I’m sure the GF would love it. Cleaned up the kitchen some. Everyone needs days like today where absolutely nothing is accomplished, and absolutely nothing need be accomplished. I’m glad I’m able to have one every now and again. more »

Ok, Maybe Monday

Posted On Friday, November 16th, 2007 By David Veatch

The birthday celebrations continue, so let’s just say I was in no shape this morning to ride. I didn’t have time to get the final touches on the bike last night anyway, so I couldn’t have ridden this morning, right?

There Was Grilling…

Posted On Sunday, July 8th, 2007 By David Veatch

This really hasn’t been the summer I imagined it would be. I imagined a lot more cycling. I imagined a lot more pool time. I imagined a lot more grilling. I imagined working on my deck, and actually being done by now. I imagined a lot less emotional turmoil. I also imagined being employed. Of those, I’ve cycled some. I’ve had a little pool time. I’ve even done a little grilling on my new Brinkman smoker, with some quality time spent on new folding camping chairs with good friends. However, I’ve not been employed, and thus, have not even started on the deck. It simply costs too much right now.

Yummy No Bake Peanut Butter Cookie

Posted On Friday, March 22nd, 2002 By David Veatch

I’ve been trying to find a recipe for years. I had it on a piece of old, torn, stained paper and somewhere in the many moves I’ve endured in the last 10 years, it’s disappeared. I just thought of it today, and thought I’d try to find it. The closest I’ve been able to come is this: NO BAKE PEANUT BUTTER CEREAL BARS 1 c. powdered sugar 1 c. light corn syrup 1 tsp. vanilla 6 c. corn flakes 1 1/2 c. peanut butter Melt sugar and corn syrup in large saucepan. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Add vanilla, cereal and peanut butter. Press into a 9×13 inch pan. Chill. Cut into bars. That looks about right, but the quantities are off a bit. Problem is, I remember enough to know that what’s listed above *isn’t* right, but not enough to know what *is* right, if you follow me. Maybe the proportions are right, there’s just more of each ingredient… I do seem to remember 3 cups cereal, instead of 6. What I do know for sure is that there was *no* chocolate, and that it was just as good to substitute Rice Krispies for flakes. Regardless, I’m more »
