Mile High Wedding

I’m extremely tired. The S.O. and I went to her brother’s wedding in Denver, CO over the weekend, and had a really good time. I met a lot of her family I’ve not met before, and saw many I’ve already met. They’re a great bunch of people, and (in spite of valiant efforts to the contrary) seem to like me as well. Now, between three late nights, the normal stress and tension of weddings, and a very late flight back on Sunday, I’m just about spent.

We flew in late Thursday, after some serious confusion at the airport due to weather in Chicago, and just crashed at the hotel. Nothing much to say about that… decent digs with an in-room fridge. Friday I went for a short 8-miler just to get out on a bike. Thanks to the groom for letting me borrow his Trek. The practice ceremony and friends/family dinner were later that evening, followed by pool at the Fox and the Hound. Aside from the drunken fools putting their full beer glasses on the pool tables, it was a perfect evening, and all the more appropriate since it was at that very establishment that the newlyweds met! (cue “Ahh’s” and “How cuuuute…’s”, please).

Saturday was the wedding proper. The weather was just about perfect for the outdoor wedding, which went off without a hitch. There were tears. Even I got a little misty. The S.O., also the groom’s younger sister (hence, my being there) was barely in control, just this side of sobbing. After that was the reception which was a blast. Though I didn’t get crazy like many of the others there, I did have a lot of fun. Like I said, a great bunch of people. Sunday was the gift opening and brunch with the family. Following that, the S.O.’s brothers and a cousin took me out on a short 10 mile ride. We were on MTB’s with fat knobbies like I was the day before, but didn’t hit any real trails… that’ll come next time, perhaps. This time was just an introduction to the altitude and a taste of what’s within riding distance of their house.

Late that evening, we got a ride to the airport and said our goodbyes. It really was a great time. I’ve gotten used to bigger families over the last couple of years, so I wasn’t overwhelmed by the many new faces… in fact, I had a great time meeting everyone I’ve not met, and seeing again those I had.

Congrats to James and Lori… the wedding was beautiful. :)
