In Kansas City: J. Alexander’s, La Cocina del Puerco, Eden Alley Cafe (basement of Unity Temple on the Plaza).
In Lawrence: Aladdin Cafe, Vermont St. BBQ, Zen Zero, Biggs BBQ (for burgers)
Lawrence:
Local Burger – Vermont St
Best Elk Burgers and everything is locally purchased.
Ingredients – Mass St
A new local chef. Wonderful sandwiches with build your own salads.
Rudy’s – Mass St
Best Pizza. I say best pizza, but I almost exclusively get Za’s. A Za is a folded pizza, different from a Calzone because the sauce is applied. Papa Keno’s gets honorable mention.
Free State Brewery – Mass St
This is obvious. However, if the wait is too much to bear, then head over to 23rd St Brewery. The beer is decent and the food is tasty good.
Indian Palace – Mass/New Hampshire
Indian food with an all you can eat lunch buffet.
Mediterranean Market – 15th/Kasold
Gyro Sandwiches and Hummus
KC Area: I tend to go to KC for sushi…
Stix – Legends Shopping Center
Hibachi and Sushi
Cheeseburger in Paradise – Legends Shopping Center
Cheeseburgers and Strawberry daiquiris
Kona Grill – The Plaza
Sushi and American dishes with an Asian twist.
Mongolian BBQ – Oak Park Area
Build your own stir fry. Takes practice, but it’s worth it.
Sushi House – Town Center Plaza
Sushi, must try the Unagi
Italian Delight – Shawnee Mission KS – Best Pizza
Ted’s Montana Grill – OP KS – Best Burgers
Mad Jack’s Fresh Fish – KC KS – Best Fish (but bring your glock)
Oklahoma Joe’s BBQ – KC KS – Best “zMan” sandwich and best Fries
Jazz- KC MO – Best Cajun
George Brett’s – KC MO – Best Sliced Filet Mijnon sandwich
Best Iced Tea – Longhorn Steakhouse, Uno Chicago Grill and McAlister’s Deli
In KC, we’ve done a little experimentation but some of the best food places don’t have the best ambiance or volume levels. Brios was great but out of control during the dinner rush. Yard House is a place we want to visit again and again- the food and the beer list add up to a great night. Granite City is also a great place.
Longhorn is a perpetual favourite of D’s, and we like to go to Ixtapa when we’re in the mood. Macelli’s has the best Sunday brunch that I’ve found in town. Free State belongs on the list, and 23rd Street was our common haunt until a bad experience turned D off. Perhaps it’s time he reviews that opinion. It’s been awhile since we’ve really canvassed restaurants, but we’d be glad to help in your quest to find the best. ;)
