Halloween Approacheth

I have only one hard and fast rule for Halloween (actually, the entire month of October). It’s not my rule actually. It’s Stu’s rule that I’ve adopted as my own. If a movie is to be watched during the month of October, it damn well better be a horror/thriller movie. Scary is best, but oddly discomforting will work as well. Laughable is fine as well, so long as it’s lampooning the horror genre.

So far this month, I’ve seen…

Raven. Some independent film. Probably some European college project. We didn’t even make it 10 minutes – just horrible.
High Tension. Not too bad. A French film along the lines of TCM and Friday the 13th, but with a twist a the end.
Pulse. Please. Communications technology as a tool of horror is nearly never done right. This is no exception. Cell phones as a conduit for malevolent spirits. Uh huh. Along those lines, the trailer for the upcoming Untraceable makes my brain hurt.
30 Days of Night. Absolutely, without reservation, fantastic. Just amazing. Visually stunning, and with a story just simple enough and with the right elements to be compelling and, if not convincing, at least engaging. Loved it. It’ll find a very nice place in my collection right alongside 300 and Sin City.

Aside from that, it’s a pretty sparse month. Normally I try to get in two or three a week, but funds have been tight for a while now. So I’ve been introducing Sweetie to Battlestar Galactica, and she’s been introducing me to Nip Tuck.

On another note, FatCyclist has a great Halloween costume article up at BikeRadar… it’s as good a take on cycling stereotypes as anything I’ve ever read, and some of them aren’t bad ideas, either…
