i need help. i would like to do the 2009 triple by-pass. i am 55 a little over weight that rides about 3500 miles a year. i live in ky. were we have hill but nothing that can match co. mtns. i guess i need some advice on how to finish this ride. what happens if you don’t finish?

For me, in Kansas where the hills are probably less intimidating even than Kentucky, it was all about miles and miles and hour and hours in the saddle. I’d set up some sort of weekly or monthly goals for yourself starting as soon as you’re able, and try to stick to it. You can start with what I describe above, with the idea being to start out small and slowly build up to rides comparable in length, if not elevation change, to the 120 miles of the Triple Bypass.
I found the altitude to be far less an obstacle than I anticipated. The climbs were less intense than I imagined as well… it’s all about finding a comfortable gear and sticking to it.
Bring warm clothes for the morning, but have some place to pack them away as the day wears on and gets warmer. Plan on rain, but hope it doesn’t happen. Ride. Ride ride ride. Ride.
If you don’t finish, you don’t finish. You get SAG’d out and go home. That’s about it.
