Skirting the Edge

I got it! I now, finally, have a Garmin Edge 305 with Heart Rate and Cadence Monitors! So far, all I’ve done is get the hardware mounted on the Torelli, and set up the device (user profile, bike profile, display settings, etc.).

Weather permitting (it’s raining right now), I’m taking it out tonight for a brief run around the airport. I did about 18 the last time I was out, I’m going to go for about the same, maybe an extra lap, tonight. I honestly cannot wait to get try this out.

Look for a more complete review over the next few days… perhaps after this weekend when I’ve had a chance to go for a longer ride. At this point, the only negative is the mounting hardware for the cadence/speed sensor on the rear chain stay and crank. The adhesive patch didn’t work on my crank b/c the inside of my crank is concave… w/o a flat surface, I’m relying on the cable tie entirely. For both the crank sensor and the GSC10 sensor, the cable ties don’t seem to solid a mounting method. No matter how tight I pull, there’s still relatively easy movement. I’m going to think about a better mounting method, but we’ll see.

On the positive side, having not actually tested it yet, I’m impressed with the display and the options available there. It’s large enough that it’ll be easy to read, without being so large as to overpower the bike profile or add too much weight. I’m looking forward to all the route options, the ability to interface with my PC and keep track of my performance and route history, and the ability to keep track of cadence, heart rates and estimated calories. I’m not sure yet how it calculates calories burned, but I’ll look into it. Honestly, I’m mainly excited about having all this data to manipulate, keep track of and look fondly on. I’m such a geek. ;)
