Oh Edge, Why Dost Thou Tease Me So?

Last night, on the way home, I noticed that my Edge wasn’t powering on. I figured (hoped) it was just a battery problem. I rushed home because I was meeting Noah near my house for the Bike to Work Week kickoff meeting, and I wanted to have time to eat before I left.

When I got home, the GF had a plate ready and all made up for me, bless her heart. A wonderful dinner to counter the sinking realization that the Edge wasn’t powering up, even plugged in to the charger. It was dead.

I fumed a bit, but ate and made my way with Noah to the BTWW meet. We hammered it a bit and tired ourselves out some, and so made it only a few minutes late.

When I got home after an fantastic late evening/night ride, I took a gander at the Edge again. Thinking there HAD to be something to do, I looked online to see if anyone else had a problem with their Edge. I found the Garmin support page the described resetting the device…

Holding down Power, Mode, and Lap/Reset, I was pleasantly surprised to see the little guy power back on again! I’m not sure what happened, but keep that in mind.

Locked up, frozen, or otherwise unresponsive Edge 305s will (sometimes) come back with a simple reset. It worked in my case, anyway.

I hated the idea of being without my stats. A geek without numbers is a sad geek, indeed.

  1. Glad you got the Edge working again. It was nice to meet you and have someone to share in my suffering.

I was way under-prepared for that kind of mileage yesterday. The last time I rode that much was November 5th, the last time I made a full bike-only round trip commute. You might not ever forget how to ride a bike, but you can certaily forget how to pace and fuel yourself!

    • Me too. I hated the idea of having to wait for a replacement.

It was nice meeting you too! There’s no substitute for having company on a ride… at least your near bonk last night wasn’t a repeat of your father’s out near Johnson drive. One day I’ll convince you to let go of that six-pack of “No Thank You” and get you out on a more epic ride… and I’ll head out with you on a dirty earthen trail ride.
