Last night I tried an extended version of my route. It’s pretty brutal. The leg between Lackman and Quivira on 71st Terrace is packed with steep rolling hills, the likes of which to make old women cry and young men blush. Leg busters they are, and I loved it (through exclamations of “Oh God!” and “Not another one!”).
The mileage on this crank ripper is about 13.6. The elevation gain is about 1,090ft. Let’s see… if I were to multiply both of those by about 10, I’d get about 136 miles and approximately 10,900ft gain. That’s comparable to the Triple Bypass! I think I’ve found a good training ride here. It takes me about an hour, so all I have to do is leave a little earlier and I’m set! The added resistance of my 45-50lbs commuter can only make this a Good ThingTM.
Ow. No, thanks. I know that section of 71st pretty well. Another good one would be to go from your place up to 67th, then cut over to Lackman. It’s probably more brutal (and trafficky) than 71st. You’re also missing some really good rollers between 67th and 71st ang again from 75th to 87th. 67th and Lackman are both wrought of pure torture.
That’s a lot of climbing for such a short ride. I didn’t even know KC had hills like that, very cool.
We don’t have any epic climbs the likes of Colorado, but we aren’t flat, by any means. My first summer back on a bike, the phrase of every ride was “Who said Kansas is flat?!”
My favorites are the 16% climbs with 45-50lbs of bike. That rocks!
Nice find, I’ve been wondering what your going to train on. If you want another round of torture, put bricks in your bag!
I’d gladly trade all of my slogs for downhills, thanks.
